The
Great Plains bio-geographic region is that high dry strip
of land not more than 500 miles wide, lying just east
of the Rocky Mountains, running from Canada to Texas.
Its altitude of 2000' - 5000' above sea level and its
low rainfall of 10" - 20" per year contribute
to a climate of harsh extremes in a land of precious
little topsoil.
The plants here are different
from their lower altitude or higher altitude cousins, but
are no less beautiful nor less deserving of study, protection,
preservation and appreciation.
